Last week I had the great opportunity to get together with a bunch of other great henna artist from Florida. Henna just like many art forms is one that you can learn on your own. However being able to get info from other talented artist is a great way to learn a bit easier and faster.

The first conference I went to a couple of years ago I was not as confident with my work as I am now even though I knew I have skills. Why you might ask? Well it was because I saw all of these other artist who specialized in traditional Indian design work and thought (stupidly I might add) that no one would want the design work I liked to do which at that time was more swirly and small flowers. Because of my insecurities I didn't to ANY art on people when I was at that conference.

I did learn my lesson though. I've done more paid and portfolio work in the last 2 years then I have in the 9 before that. Thus adding more confidence and the desire to try bigger design work and new techniques. At last weekends event I got the chance to to art on 2 beautiful artist who were willing to let me go 'big' and I'm very thankful :)

This is Alanna. She has been doing henna off and on since she was 13 (she's 22 now) and she was at the conference to learn more and try some things out.

She recently started a new organization with her mom called Floating Lanterns
Memorials which helps people remember their pets who have died. They are not a non-profit, but they do donate to non-profits that are in line with their companies values.

She has an event next week and will be showing off my art which I'm excited to see photos of and share more about her and her group in the future. :)

This is Courtney. She is a wonderful henna artist, model and photographer. I know you can't see it here.. but she has bright blue eyes and a very witty humor that makes everyone laugh. I love working with other people who 'get' henna and love how it works and the art of it.

If you are an aspiring henna artist I would highly suggest trying to get with other local artist and have a get together and share tips, techniques and get henna from someone other than yourself! LOL

If you are not a henna artist but know of one and love henna, make sure they know you would be willing to 'model' at a future henna gathering event. Sometimes there are more artist who want to do work and not get work done on them. So extra people are used. :)

I look forward to sharing more stuff with everyone in the future!

Why I do henna art

I've been doing henna for over 11 years. It all started when I went to a Ren Faire in Ohio. I got a simple design down one finger and LOVED it! I researched more about what henna is and how it works and decided I wanted to learn how to do it.

Thankfully I am already able to draw so teaching myself how to do this art form came more naturally. However drawing with a henna cone or bottle is unlike other art. You don't actually touch the skin, you hover over it and lay your lines down. Kind of like cake decorating.

Some of the main questions I get asked are answered here, however here are some other questions:

- Do you do real tattoos?
No, however I have thought about it, but it would take time to learn that skill and I am focusing my energy elsewhere

- Did you go to school for this?
No, I'm self taught. Most of stuff I have done in my life I have taught myself how to do it. This comes with pros and cons.
Pros - you are learning it at your own pace and develop a style.
Cons - it can take longer to learn, and you may not be doing things they way they should be done

- Can you do a all over henna tan?
No, because your skin varies in thicknesses as well as where clothes will wear/exfoliate more, you would not get an even stain all over your body.

These are just some of the questions I get asked on a regular basis when doing henna at events and parties. :) In this blog I hope to help you understand more about henna and come to appreciate it as much as I do.
